The Project

This project was done as a part of the Spatial Concepts course under the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture. The assignment was to create a space that was truly your own.

I started the project by thinking of a space that could only be experienced by myself. Having learned to surf when I was very young, I thought of the space that gets created inside a wave. This space is completely unique, non-replicable and only experienced by me. No two waves can be the same, and no two people can be in the exact same spot in the wave at the same time. I also wanted to make it about the meaning behind the space, and not about the exact shape or intricate details that I could get into while trying to recreate water. Therefore, I chose to create an organic-looking structure out of identical, inorganic blocks.

The Materials

The choice of materials was very important to me. I wanted to use something that could capture the translucent skin of a wave and the shades of green light filtering through. I originally thought about glass. However, I realized I also wanted to capture the delicate and temporary essence of the space. I chose to use soap as a material, as the shape of the space would therefore be constantly changing as the soap dissolves with water (the very thing is it meant to represent).
