The Project

This project was done as part of the Spatial Concepts course from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture. The assignment was to create a space to make.

I decided to make a space where one could make more space. The idea was to create an enclosed environment with no space and have whoever is experiencing be able to create his or her own space.

I was inspired by coral reefs, and how they are created by little larvae making space for both themselves and other creatures around. I was also inspired by how human waste is interfering with corals to the point where they are not able to create this space anymore.

Materials

I decided to create a coral-like space using recycled straws. The choice of material was made as a way of taking something plastic that would otherwise end up in the ocean and prevent corals from making their space, and using that to make more space. I decided to build a skeleton framework that would allow the straws to slide up and down.

Final Project

The final project were all the straws would be pushed in at first. Once a person crawled into the structure, he/she would be able to push out the straws and create his/her own space.
